Juanita Floyd is the author of the children’s book Summer of 1969, based on her experiences surrounding school integration in Mississippi. Juanita has been telling her story for many years, and she was honored to work with Sara Berry to create an illustrated book for children that shares her mother’s message of love and acceptance. Join us for our May meeting to hear more about Juanita’s story, the inspiration she received from her mother, and the process of publishing and promoting her book.

More About Our Presenter:

Juanita Gambrell Floyd is the Vice-President of Finance and Administration at the CREATE Foundation, where she has been for 34 years. She is active in community affairs and serves on several boards. She served as the Tupelo High School PTO president for the school year 2011-2012 and was selected as “Parent of the Year” at the High School. In 2008, she was honored as the Tupelo Trailblazer of the Year. In January, 2016, she was highlighted on WTVA for the Positively Mississippi segment featuring local heroes during Black History Month.

For several years, Juanita has been an inspirational and motivational speaker. She has spoken to various civic, social, educational, and church groups. In May 2017, she was the Commencement Speaker for Itawamba Community College and the Black History Speaker for Tupelo High School – one of the largest high schools in the state. She has been writing monthly for over 10 years as a Community Columnist for the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal. She has co-authored a children’s book called Summer of 1969.

Juanita is a graduate of Northeast Mississippi Community College and the University of Mississippi with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. She is an active member of Jesus New Testament Holiness Church in the Red Hill Community of Union County. She is the daughter of the late Frank and Bernice Gambrell of the Red Hill Community. She is the proud parent of three children, Tyler, Taylor, and Tyra and two grandsons, Andrew and Seven.

Her favorite quote (author unknown) is: I shall not pass this way but once, therefore any good that I can do, any kindness that I can show, Let me do it now! I shall not pass this way again! Her favorite passage of scripture is the entire chapter of Psalms 23.
