Writing with Pride: A reading with Mississippi LGBTQ Writers
June 22, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
UPDATED TIME & DATE!
Come celebrate Pride month on June 22 and hear three Mississippi writers read from their work: John W Bateman, Brandy T. Wilson, and T.K. Lee.
John W. Bateman will read from his new novel, Who Killed Buster Sparkle?
“When a drag queen named Peaches meets Buster, a Mississippi ghost with partial amnesia, questions of past, present, and future surface. Buster attempts to reckon with who he was and is in the presence of Peaches, whose gender-fluid identity perplexes him. Although he doesn’t want to associate with Peaches, Buster realizes that he must push aside his biases to avoid eternal loneliness.”
Brandy T Wilson will read from her novel The Palace Blues.
“It is the age of bathtub gin, jazz–and lines. Lines not to be crossed, and certainly not by women. Ladies sing the blues at The Palace and the rebellious, resourceful Frankie admires the cross-dressing Jean Bailey from afar. Running from her family’s oppressive pressure to marry, Frankie abandons her safe, white life in Chicago and follows the blues singer instead. . . . The railroad yards, good times, riverboats and bum times lead Frankie on a remarkable journey between the sterile choices of her family and a reckless, daring life that at least offers a kind of freedom for a girl like her.”
T.K. Lee reads from To Square a Circle.
“To Square a Circle is firmly rooted in the rich, at times mythically rural language of the Deep South, as it peels back the edges of an arrested coming-of-age story, told in honest language and evocative imagery through the eyes of an unnamed narrator wrestling with his own independent voice against the persistent truths inherited from within the wound and ache of a dying, patchwork family.”
