Cold Weather and Grilled Butts!

0

Friends, it is COLD this morning! How many of y’all grew up in a house with just a couple of heaters?

We did! I can’t take the cold like I used to. Maybe that’s why? We had one gas heater in the living room, after we quit using the fireplace. And one in the big ole kitchen. The rest of the house went unheated! You slept in the cold!

We would stand by the heater getting our nerve up, and tear out down the hall and jump under the covers! We had hump-teen quilts — so many you couldn’t roll over!

Maw Nell had a big old feather bed! Loved those in the winter! You just fell in and the bed sorta fluffed up around you! Then on a cold morning like today, you piled out, grabbed your clothes and dressed in front of the heater! Man that was fun!

More than one person I know got branded by them old heaters! If you bent over too close you got grill marks on your buttocks! Gosh that hurt!

A friend of mine got scarred for life on his butt! And years later if anybody saw it, and asked, he told them he got hurt in the War! Ha! Well he said that was partly true cause he was fighting one of his brothers for a warm spot!

And life goes on, on Thompson Hill.

Heads Explode As Tupelo Motorist Uses Right Lane To Cruise

0

Tupelo — Pandemonium ensued this Friday when a slow driver made the unprecedented decision to switch to the right lane, marking the first time a Tupelo driver had ever used the right lane to cruise.

“I was crossing Green Street when I looked up from my phone and saw a line of traffic backed up behind me all the way to Pizza Vs Tacos,” remembers Scotty Whitlock. “I didn’t need to be anywhere, so I just got over and let them pass.”

No one expected this maneuver. Upon witnessing Whitlock’s actions, other drivers were stunned.

“Everyone who passed me just stared at me with a look of shock and wonder. I saw someone get rear-ended.”

A few travelers even pulled into St. James Catholic Church to pray.

“It was madness,” says traumatized motorist Cindy Byrd. “We are not used to that kind of behavior around here. We only ever use the right lane to pass, and when things happen that you don’t understand, it’s best to lean on a higher power.”

Even bystanders were surprised by what they saw.

“I was in Planet Fitness doing sit-ups as quietly as possible so that the others in the gym wouldn’t think I was judging them and start crying,” says Brittney Ingram of Saltillo. “I looked out the window and saw some slow poke merge into the right lane and I gasped so hard I set off the Lunk Alarm.”

When asked how this will affect his driving in the future, Whitlock has at least one idea.

“Well, I didn’t use my blinker when I moved over. In hindsight I’m glad I didn’t because no one in Tupelo has ever seen one before; so that on top of my changing lanes might have been too much for them. It could have cost lives. Hopefully the example I set will catch on, and then eventually I can expose the town to turn signals.”

When The Brainpan Springs A Leak

0

Yall. Listen. I love my husband to BITS, but sometimes he just does stuff that drives me bananas. And I don’t mean normal stuff, like the fact that he’s 42 and still has to tear the house apart every single morning to find his keys and wallet, even though I bought a little rack specifically for that more than fifteen years ago.

I swear this is not that complicated to use…

No, I mean stuff that makes you wonder where his head is at, like putting salt in his coffee instead of sugar, or picking up the ketchup bottle for a drink instead of the tea glass sitting next to it. It’s just a weird level of auto-functioning while being checked out on the details. I don’t quite get it, but I’ve learned to live with it.

But also, I’m sort of the same way when it comes to hearing what people say. Like, I hear you… but I don’t hear you. I can audibly hear the sound of your voice, but it just sounds like Charlie Brown’s teacher off in the background, no distinguishable words.

So, when you put us together, that leads to crazy frustration on some days, but no end of hilarity on others.

One day, we were driving down the road, headed to run some errands. He was going on about a particular model of guitar he had on his wish list. I don’t remember what it was, but it was crazy expensive. Anyway, I had long since zoned out as he waxed poetic about pickups and pots and caps and whatnot. And then he said, “I’m GETTING that guitar. I don’t care if I have to sell a kidney.”

But what I HEARD was, “I don’t care if I have to sell a KID.” Which, you know, I thought was a little extreme, but we do have a lot of kids, so I was willing to roll with it for the sake of in-the-moment humor. So I leaned into this thought experiment with interest, “Which one?”

“Hell, I don’t care. Both of them, if I have to.”

“Both? We have FIVE.”

He looked at me, completely incredulous, “Who the hell has five kidneys?”

“What?”

“What?”

“What are you talking about?”

“What are YOU talking about?”

A lot of our conversations end up like that. Another day, I woke up to the sound of retching coming from the bathroom. He has a very sensitive gag-reflex, so I’m used to hearing a little bit of gagging every morning when he brushes his teeth, but this particular morning, it was on another level. It really sounded like he was getting ready to call some dinosaurs.

I yelled down the hall, “Babe, you alright in there?”

And I swear to my time, I heard him say, “I thought Alex got me another toothbrush.”

But what he actually said was, “I accidentally put Icy Hot on my toothbrush.”

I mean…

By the time we unraveled the situation, I thought I was going to have to call Poison Control.

In his defense, the tube wasn’t face up and it does sort of resemble a toothpaste tube.

But I did give serious thought to putting a child lock on the medicine cabinet.

Growing old (and senile) together is going to be so much fun, I can tell already.

Memories and My Missing Stuff!

0

Friends, this memory thing ain’t funny! Most of y’all know what I’m talking about! It used to be funny but the fun done went out of it!

And it must be old age! It makes you tell stories! Don’t it? Well it does! You tell stories all the time!

You tell yourself, “Oh I can remember that phone number!” Yeah right! I can look one up and forget it while I’m dialing it! And I know, we don’t dial phones now! Humor me please? I’m old and forgetful!

You talk to yourself now! You remember old people doing that when you were younger? You would hear an old person just a mumbling! Now you know why! They were just trying to repeat something till they could write it down!

And stuff just goes missing! Like ink pens! Can’t find one when you need it! And if you did find it, you couldn’t find nothing to write on!

I was in my old truck the other day and needed to make a call! Called someone to get the number, couldn’t find a pen! Looked high and low in my old truck! Found my lost pocket knife, nineteen empty water bottles, and one left handed glove! But no pen! So I just wrote the number on the dash! Just used my finger to write it in the dust! Now it will be there if I need it again!

Now what did I do with that pocket knife? Dang kids! Keep getting my stuff!

And life goes on, on Thompson Hill.

It All Tastes Like Chicken

0

Friends, I went down the hill the other day to check on John Barry! He was outside, and he said, “I got that chicken hawk that has been getting my chickens! He got tangled up in that netting that he had stretched over the chicken pen!”

He asked, “Will you help me skin and dress it?”

I said yes, and we proceeded to pluck the chicken hawk!

Now, I stood it as long as I could stand it, but I had to ask, “What the heck you gonna do with this hawk after we dress it?”

He said, “I’m going to cook it! And give it to Jeff! He has been sorta sickly lately, thought some chicken soup might help him to feel better!”

“But,” I said, “John Barry, this ain’t a chicken? It’s a chicken hawk!”

He said, “Okay, but what do they eat?”

Of course I said, “Mostly chicken!”

He said, “Yes and a lot of mine lately!”

He put that chicken hawk in the crock pot and was adding all kinds of stuff.

I just had to ask, “Can Jeff not tell that this ain’t chicken?”

He laughed and said, “Well he didn’t say nothing last week when he ate that Hoot Owl!”

And life goes on, on Thompson Hill.

BRING BACK PORCHES

0

Friends, better weather is on the way!

Y’all know what I miss? I miss porches! No, not these modern style porches! The old ones! They weren’t just there for decoration! They were put to use!

They were always a good shady place to play! Rocking chairs and all. Even had a couple of straight chairs or an old bench to sit on!

I always loved those old dogtrot houses with the big porches. You could follow the shade all the way round the house!

And they used them! We shelled peas on em, dried apples on em. We made the kids stay outside and play on em — or under them too! We always had two or three old dogs sleeping under there! The cats could come up on the porch, but the dogs had to stay off!

Oh, every once in a while, one would try to sneak up the steps and somebody would holler, “Get on out from here!” That usually worked pretty good!

Most of the old men shaved out on the porch! I guess the light was better, so they wouldn’t make a mess! Always had an old mirror hanging on the wall!

And don’t you miss porch swings! Spend a lot of time swinging on them!

Just seemed like simpler times then, maybe that’s what I miss!

And life goes on, on Thompson Hill!
