Sports Review – Week of 4/1- 4/7

0

Welp guys and gals, we arriving to a part of the year where we will be pulling out every trick in the book to make sports happen. Football is on hiatus, basketball has crowned a national champion, we’ve got baseball…. Who knows in the upcoming weeks you may see coverage of Field Hockey! Curling! Cricket! Water Polo!

Lets go!!!!!!

Baseball

Ryan Olenek slides around Florida’s catcher for the score.

Ole Miss started out the baseball week in rough fashion. On Tuesday the Rebels hit the diamond against North Alabama to only see a loss in the final. The Lions took the victory from the home team Rebels 10-6. Max Cioffi was charged with the loss from the mound allowing 5 runs on 6 hits in 3.2 innings pitched. With that Mike Bianco ripped the review window out of the car and looked ahead to the daunting weekend series with the Florida Gators. In baseball it’s best to have short term memory, luckily for the Rebels that was the case as they took the series sweep over the Gators with finals of 12-4 (Friday), 16-4 (Saturday Game 1), and 12-10 (Saturday Game 2). This week the Rebels face Southern Miss in Pearl (as of this writing the Rebels are up 7-2 in the top of the 8th inning). The weekend series will see Ole Miss host the Kentucky Wildcats who are setting at 17-15 overall.

For the Mississippi State Bulldogs the mid-week obliteration continued. The final for their game with the ULM Warhawks ended 21-8. The focus then shifted to the weekend series where the maroon and white traveled to “Rocky Top” to face off with the Tennessee Volunteers. Friday’s victory for MSU would take 11 innings but the result would be accepted with a final of 6-3. Jake Mangum would go into the history books in this game as he became the Bulldogs all time hits leader with 337. This also pushed Mangum to top 5 in the conference all time. Saturday would be a pitchers duel however, this time would go in favor of the Vols. The 2-1 final would see Peyton Plumlee charged with the loss allowing 2 runs (1 earned) over 5 ⅓ innings. Sunday the Bulldogs would clinch the series with the 7-5 victory. This week MSU hosts South Alabama on Wednesday night, followed by a weekend series hosting the Alabama Crimson Tide for the annual Super Bulldog Weekend.

Jake Mangum etches his name in school and SEC leader boards.

Football

The big news in football was that the Alliance of American Football chairman, Tom Dundon, made the decision to cease operations immediately. So for Memphis, Birmingham, and the other 6 teams the inaugural season came to an unexpected a disappointing halt. The AAF brought much excitement in the first week of competition, however, with being on obscure networks and live streams that people had to search through their listings for made it extremely difficult for the customer to become invested in the product. Going forward, what does this mean for the re-emerging XFL in 2020? Can anyone else co-exist in the world of professional football with the NFL? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Check back later this week as we will review and give some thumbs up and thumbs down on the Ole Miss Grove Bowl from last Saturday.

WWE

Hey I told you from the get go we are going to get adventurous!

It just so happens that Vince McMahon and company correlated their schedule with this article to have their biggest show of the year! The showcase of the immortals, Wrestlemania.

Wrestlemania 35

This year’s spectacle took place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey in front of 82,265 fans. For those of you, like me, who can’t afford the trip to New York and the lowest price tickets of $165 per person, you probably took to the couch with the $9.99 a month WWE Network. The show pushed a whopping 7 hours! So there’s the details now how about some match results?!

  • Tony Nese defeated Buddy Murphy for the Cruiserweight Championship
  • Carmella won the Women’s Battle Royal
  • Zack Ryder & Curt Hawkins defeated The Revival for the Raw Tag Team Championships
  • Braun Strowman won the Andre The Giant Battle Royal
  • Seth Rollins defeated Brock Lesnar for the Universal Title
  • A.J. Styles defeated Randy Orton
  • The Usos defeated The Bar, Aleister Black & Ricochet, Shinsuke Nakamura & Rusev to retain the Smackdown Tag Team Titles.
  • Shane McMahon defeated The Miz in a falls count anywhere match
  • The IIconics defeated Sasha Banks & Bayley, Nia Jax and Tamina, Natalya & Beth Phoenix for the Women’s Tag Team Titles
  • Kofi Kingston defeated Daniel Bryan to win the WWE Championship
  • Samoa Joe defeated Rey Mysterio to retain the U.S. Championship
  • Roman Reigns defeated Drew Mcyntire
  • Triple H defeated Batista in a No Holds Barred Match with Triple H’s career on the line.
  • Baron Corbin defeated Kurt Angle in Kurt Angle’s farewell match
  • Finn Balor adorned his demon persona and defeated Bobby Lashley to win the Intercontinental Championship
  • Becky Lynch defeated Charlotte Flair and Ronda Rousey to win and unify the Raw and Smackdown Women’s Titles.

Wrestlemania 35 fun facts:

The 82,265 fans in attendance set the WWE-MetLife Stadium attendance record.

The IIconics (Peyton Royce and Billie Kay) won their 1st ever championships as singles or tag team competitors.

Kofi Kington’s WWE Championship win is the first of his 11 year career and he is only the 2nd African American competitor to hold the tile (prev. The Rock) and is the 1st Native African American to wear the WWE Championship.

Roman Reigns got his 1st singles pay per view victory since returning from his battle with leukemia.

Becky Lynch, Ronda Rousey, and Charlotte Flair became the first women competitors to headline Wrestlemania in it’s 35 year run.

That’s all this week!

The first and third Monday of the month, Arc of Northeast Mississippi has family bowling at Rebelanes. It is normally $5.00 to bowl (includes everything), but on the 15th, they are having a big fundraiser and charging $10.00 for adults. Kids are free. We are having food and prizes too. They emphasize inclusion of all…and this is a great outing for everyone regardless of disability, or age. Volunteers will be present to help the kids bowl! So this means, parents can enjoy grown up time. Not too bad for having fun for a reasonable price while helping your community!

Denim & Diamonds 2019

0

Saturday April 6th Fulton, MS

For the fourth year in a row, Crossroads Ranch held their primary annual fundraiser, Denim & Diamonds. Hosted at Sheffield Manor in downtown Fulton, the event brings together people from all walks of life to support the Ranch and its work of building housing and jobs for special needs adults.

For those who don’t know, Crossroads Ranch is in the process of building a large number of independent living cabins with built in storm shelters, as well as enhancing the land around the cabins to create an environment that makes these adults comfortable and safe, while giving the freedom to live their own lives. Along with living facilities, there is a working ceramics lodge, where various potteries are produced both to give the residents a chance to work and help support the Ranch.

Fundraising comes not only from the price of Admission, but from several activities held at the event. There was a live auction, a silent auction, a raffle driven wheel of fortune, a wine bottle grab, ring toss, chinese raffle, and an open bar.

D&D this year was at Sheffield Manor, the historic and only recently (5 years ago) remodeled home set on a beautiful farm style lot in the heart of Fulton. There is a home, that is in use most of the year, a barn built solely for entertaining, with a great bar, a stage, seating arrangements, a fireplace. Closer to the house is another entertaining building with open buffet style serving and sitting area.

As always, the event is sponsored at various donation levels by companies and individuals in the community. Under the big tents set between the home and barn, large tables are set aside for the contributors, as well as extra room in and around the tents for all attendees.

Among the items sold at live auction, including paintings and a shotgun, the most popular and by far best deal made, was the brand new Yamaha touring motorcycle with leather saddle bags and a space age helmet. Bids were hot and fast for the bike, and someone went home with a new toy to take some serious pride in.

Raffle tickets were sold for chances to spin the Wheel of Fortune, which had over 20 prizes from local restaurants and retailers, including Blue Canoe, Steele’s Dive, Nautical Whimsy, and many more.

After the buffet style meal and auctions, The Barn opened up for live music and other raffle events with prizes like a “Champaign and Spa” package, dozens of different wines, a yard tool package, and more.

Jason Childers, with a great band backing him up, provided the music for the evening. Selections leaned country and classic rock, but no matter your tastes, there was no denying the joy in the music and the fun had by all. Quite a lot of couples danced the night away.

I don’t yet have final numbers on the amount earned, and I’ll update this article when those are in, but I wanted to get you the info and pictures while it was all fresh.

On This Day

National Love Our Children Day! This is a day celebrated annually on the first Sunday in April, as an initiative of Love Our Children USA. A day to acknowledge the value of children, to educate parents of the importance of showing love, protection, and respect. We need to strengthen families and spread awareness for efforts to keep our children safe. Go hug your child or a child dear to you. Talk to them and just ask how they are and let them know they are loved!

National Sorry Charlie Day! Today we need to think about the times we have been rejected. This gives us an opportunity to reflect on how we survived the rejection and learned from it. I know I have been rejected many times. I have also reacted several different ways. How can you strengthen your circumstances?

National Caramel Popcorn Day! Popcorn is always better with caramel or lots of butter. Caramel popcorn coated with a sugar or molasses based caramel candy! Grab a movie and some caramel popcorn!

National Student-Athlete Day! Nationally recognized on today but celebrated throughout March and April at NCAA Colleges and Universities. It recognizes the accomplishments of student-athletes who excel in the classroom, on the field, and give back to their community. Do you know a student-athlete? Whether he/she is in school or college, congratulate them today!

National Teflon Day! Teflon is a tough synthetic resin made by polymerizing tetrafluroethylene, used coat non-stick cooking utensils and cookware. It is also used to make seals and bearings. It also can refer to an individual who can handle criticism or attack with no effect. I know Teflon makes cooking better. I guess it could make feelings better too especially when it comes to rejection.

National Tartan Day! A celebration of Scottish Heritage, on this day in 1320, which was the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath. This was the Scottish Declaration of Independence. The American Independence was modified from this. It also recognizes the achievements of Americans with Scottish descent. There are typically parades of bag pipes bands, Highland dancing, and Scottish-themed events.

National Poetry Month! The aim of this day is to highlight the legacy and ongoing achievements of American poets. It is to encourage the reading of poems, assist teachers in bringing poetry to their classroom, and encourage support for poets and poetry. Are you a poet or do you know one? Take a minute and write a poem, rhyme, or haiku!

National Caramel Day! Caramel is a brown confectionery product made by heating a variety of sugars. Caramel is one of my favorite cakes and ice cream topping. It goes will with chocolate in candy and clusters. Go devour some caramel today.

National Read a Road Map Day! This day is set aside to encourage us to improve our map reading skills. Due to advanced technology, and the making of GPS and map applications, most people do not read maps anymore. This was a requirement for me in the 8th grade. I can read a map very well as long as I know the direction. Go grab a map and educate yourself. You never know when you will not have any service!

National Deep Dish Pizza Day! The deep dish pizza is a popular style pizza originating in Chicago. It is baked in a pan and gives the pizza its high edge and deep surface for large amounts of cheese and pizza sauce. This used to be my favorite style of pizza crust until I discovered thin & crispy. I like a variety. Stop by your favorite pizza spot and indulge on some pan pizza today!

National Inventor’s Month! This is a celebration of invention and creativity started in 1998. The United Inventors Association of the USA (UIA-USA), the Academy of Applied Science, and the Inventors’ Digest magazine created this. Do you have an idea or invention? This month is the month to have it patented or acknowledged. Do you know someone who has an idea? This month is the month to encourage them!
