On This Day

National HIV Vaccine Awareness Day! This observance provides an opportunity to recognize and thank the many volunteers, community members, health professionals, and scientists who are trying to find a safe and effective HIV vaccine. It also educates communities about the importance of preventative care and research.

National No Dirty Dishes Day! Today encourages everyone to take a break from dishes and spend the time saved doing things for fun. Sounds to me like procrastination and laziness. I might enjoy!

National Cheese Souffle Day! This is made with egg yolks, beaten egg whites, and cheese and served as a savory dish.

International Museum Day! Since 1977, this day has been celebrated and helps raise awareness on the importance of museums to society and communities.

National Armed Forces Day! On August 31, 1941, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of the Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force Days. This single day stems from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense. Citizens are encouraged to come together and thank our military for their patriotic services and support for our country for our freedom.

National Learn to Swim Day! This is an effort to bring awareness about the importance of teaching children to swim.

Word of the Day: Palimpsest is the writing material (such as a parchment or tablet) used one or more times after earlier writing had been erased. It can also be something having usually diverse layers or aspects apparent beneath the surface.

Quote of the Day: Few men, during their lifetime, come anywhere near exhausting the resources dwelling within them. There are deep wells of strength that are never used. -Richard Evelyn Byrd
