On This Day

National Peace Rose Day! in early 1945, French horticulturist Francis Meilland developed the peace rose with crimson pink edges and yellow to off white centers. Meilland wrote to Field Marshall Alan Brooke thanking him for key in liberation to France. Meilland originally asked Brooke to use his name for the rose. Brooke suggested peace was a more suitable name. Therefore, on this day in 1945, the flower was officially named.

National Zipper Day! Gideon Sunback designed this fastener while working at the Universal Fastener Company in Hoboken, New Jersey. It was patented on this day in 1913.
