A Bird in the Hand…

Friends, growing up we ate just about anything! We ate lots of rabbit and squirrels! Quail were plentiful on the farm and we loved them!

John Barry, our older brother, got to hunt more than we did, and one evening he came in from hunting and handed mom three birds that he had already dressed and cleaned and told mom they were quail.

As it was getting close to supper time, Mom said, “Boys, if y’all want me to, I’ll cook these quail for your supper?”

Of course me and my brother Emory weren’t about to turn down a good quail supper!

Mom cooked the birds and made good ole biscuits and gravy!

We sure enjoyed it and bragged to mom that these were some good quail and she sure cooked us a great supper!

Well, the next morning, Emory and I were out in the backyard playing and saw a big pile of feathers!

We could tell right off that it sure wasn’t quail feathers. On closer examination, we discovered they were from a couple of woodpeckers and a meadow lark.

Now Emory and I weren’t detectives, but we had pretty well discovered that we hadn’t eaten quail for supper last night.

From what we could tell we had eaten two woodpeckers and a side order of meadow lark!

Thanks to John Barry, now we could add that to the long list of critters we had eaten at least once!

And life goes on, on Thompson Hill.
