Friends, better weather is on the way!
Y’all know what I miss? I miss porches! No, not these modern style porches! The old ones! They weren’t just there for decoration! They were put to use!
They were always a good shady place to play! Rocking chairs and all. Even had a couple of straight chairs or an old bench to sit on!
I always loved those old dogtrot houses with the big porches. You could follow the shade all the way round the house!
And they used them! We shelled peas on em, dried apples on em. We made the kids stay outside and play on em — or under them too! We always had two or three old dogs sleeping under there! The cats could come up on the porch, but the dogs had to stay off!
Oh, every once in a while, one would try to sneak up the steps and somebody would holler, “Get on out from here!” That usually worked pretty good!
Most of the old men shaved out on the porch! I guess the light was better, so they wouldn’t make a mess! Always had an old mirror hanging on the wall!
And don’t you miss porch swings! Spend a lot of time swinging on them!
Just seemed like simpler times then, maybe that’s what I miss!
And life goes on, on Thompson Hill!
