Attend What A Novel Affair tonight benefiting Lee County Library. Guests will enjoy live music and several dishes prepared by local food trucks. There will be a live auction and a silent auction. Events begin at 6:00 p.m. at the BancorpSouth Conference Center. Tickets are required for the event. A Novel affair an annual fundraiser. The proceeds will go towards purchasing a new bookmobile. The majority of the library’s funding comes from the City of Tupelo – Mayor’s Office and Lee County. They are also supported by a generous group of volunteers called Friends of the Library. They are the hosts of the event. If you cannot make it to the event, you can still donate for the cause.

Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit, including wife, Amanda Shires, brought southern gothic fire to Tupelo at the BancorpSouth Arena on Sunday, March, 31st.

Mainstream Radio has still not embraced Jason Isbell yet, but that certainly did not stop the fans from coming and filling up the seats in Tupelo for such an amazing show.

Amanda Shires opened the show, and then accompanied Jason for his set on the violin and backup vocals.

Amanda Shires is a singer-songwriter and violin player from Texas who has released 6 solo albums, including her latest work, 2018’s “To The Sunset”.

She has also collaborated with several well-known artists such as John Prine, Chris Isaak, Todd Snider, and the Thrift Store Cowboys.

Amanda Shires also won a Grammy Award for her work with Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit in 2018 on the album “The Nashville Sound”.

Jason’s musical journey started when he was a teenager in Northern Alabama but cumulated when he joined Southern Rock Group “Drive-By Truckers” when he was 22 years old. He parted with them in 2007 and started on his solo career, which to this date, has earned him a total of 4 Grammy wins including Best Americana Album twice.

Isbell’s band, Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit, is primarily made up of musicians from the Muscle Shoals, Alabama, area.

He brought along his 1959 Gibson Les Paul guitar named “Red Eye” an iconic guitar formerly owned by Ed King of Lynyrd Skynyrd until his passing, and used it for a majority of the show. Referencing Tupelo’s own Paul Thorn and finishing the show with a blazing cover of The Allman Brothers Band “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed”, followed by Fleetwood Mac’s “Oh Well” it was a great night for music lovers at Tupelo’s BancorpSouth Arena.

We begin our Wednesday with mostly clear skies and cold temperatures. Most areas will be in the upper 30s to lower 40s. But for those who manage to drop into the mid-30s, we could see some patchy frost development. It will thaw quickly after the sun rises.Throughout the day, the sun will shine across the region along with a south wind between 5 and 10 mph. This will promote a fast warm-up. Highs should climb into the lower and mid-70s across the north while those across the south reach the upper 70s in spots.
Clouds increase a bit into the night with temperatures slipping into the lower 50s. A few spotty showers begin moving eastward into the region sometime Thursday morning.

A lot of people wonder what streamers actually do.  What does streaming mean? What exactly is the job description of a streamer?  From personal experience I can give you a look into the life of a streamer somewhat.  My journey is still in progress and by no means is the norm, because to be honest there isn’t one.  Streaming is different for each and every individual that attempts to do it. Today we will look at some of the different aspects of streaming and why it’s becoming insanely popular.

So to get an idea from the newer generation I decided to have a chat with my nine-year old daughter.  In this conversation I asked her why did she like to watch streams. Her response was enlightening and I realized I related to her answer a lot.  She told me that she likes to watch people play games that she doesn’t have. Thinking about her answer I realized that this was the reason that I started watching streams in the first place.  What’s better than getting a game review from a normal person that you can relate to? Nobody likes to spend upwards of 60 dollars to get a game they may end up feeling they wasted money on. Another reason people love watching streamers is to see some incredible professional level gameplay.

People I used to look up to as some of the top players in the Halo tournament scene are now streamers. There is something about watching someone who is really good at a game doing stuff that should be on montages live. One of the major factors for me is entertainment value. Even if you are really good at the game you have to be somewhat interesting to keep the interest of the viewers.  Some of the streamers that I like to watch CinnamontoastKen, Buffpro, CDNthe3rd, and Ninja are some of the most entertaining streamers in my opinion. Shameless promo for these guys go look them up on Twitch. A lot of game developers have their own Twitch channels as well to stream important tournaments and game updates on their channels. Riot is one of those companies that have made a league for their game League of Legends which streams every weekend.  Channels like these are very popular in their own rights.

There are a number of different reasons streamers decide to stream.  Some just want to share their experiences with others. Gaming is a way to share good times among friends and some streamers, myself included, consider their viewers as friends.  My journey personally started after being diagnosed with ESRD(end stage renal disease). I always had a love for gaming and with a lot more time on my hands after the diagnosis I decided I wanted to share my gaming experiences with others.  Some start streaming as a part-time hobby hoping to eventually upgrade it into full-time and a way to make a living. First and foremost to me is the idea of always having fun. If you are having fun streaming games then you are taking away from your own love of games.

You don’t necessarily have to play videos game to be a successful streamer. You can do art. Cooking, or just hang out in real life. The way you decide to stream is up to you as long as you meet the requirements set by the platform you decide to stream on. Honestly a lot of time and hard work goes into becoming a streamer.  It seems like it would be just playing games but there is so much more involved. You have to be able to network and promote your stream. These are two of the things which I am working on myself at the moment. I feel like you need to network and promote to get people to your channel and then once they are there the entertainment and content come into play.

With streaming becoming so popular here lately, it has also gained a lot of monetary value as well.  Many big name streamers are actually sponsored by different companies that aren’t just video game companies.  Some are sponsored by tech giants such as Samsung. Many as you would expect have sponsorship ties to companies that deal with gaming computers.  You have some that are sponsored by food delivery companies such as GrubHub. You can even get some money off by entering the special code provided by the streamer.  You would be surprised how much money you can save on some discount offers by companies that you get from watching a streamer. Some streamers even get paid to play games as an ad for the games release or major updates. Apex Legends had many big name streamers doing sponsored streams the first day of the release.

There are many different ways that streaming provides a source of revenue it just takes the work to find it and work out the details.  A lot of the specifics escape me because I have yet to come to that point in my career. The journey is not a simple straight path. If it was a lot more people would do it.

There’s a New Station in Town..

Locally owned and operated 95.1 The Farm is taking over the airwaves. Located on that same spot on your dial as the now retired ESPN station, The Farm is looking to be something a bit unique to the area.

Real Variety

There are few things I dislike more when it comes to my listening times than to hear the same 20 songs over and over and over. Even when you hear something not currently charting in the top 20, its too often something that WAS a year or two ago.

95.1 The Farm says they are up to do something new. Speaking with the managing partner, I got a good sense of the plan, and that sense was emphasized listening to the station some the last few days.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not the worlds biggest country music fan, but I’ve listened enough over the years to know too many stations stick to the same formula. The Farm’s difference is they are going to play those B sides you’ve not hear in a decade, the song you enjoyed but didn’t chart, or only did for a short time. The deep catalog as I call it. I’m looking forward to seeing them grow.

Overall, high pressure will continue to control our weather forecast through the next few days and this will mean some pretty good weather will continue in our weather forecast over the next few days. We will see a couple of frontal systems will give us a couple of chances for some showers and thunderstorms in our weather forecast down the line. One of those chances that stands out will be on our Thursday and another chance will be found in our weather forecast for our late weekend and into early next week. There will be some chances for some heavy and/or hefty thunderstorms in the mix of things with these frontal passages. Today sunny, with a high near 64°. Calm wind becoming northwest around 5 mph in the afternoon. Tonight clear, with a low around 41°. Calm wind.

National Reconciliation Day! Since 1989, newspaper columnist, Ann Landers has promoted this day to encourage people to mend their broken relationships. Do you need to fix one of yours? National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day! It’s peanut butter and jelly time! PB&J is a popular sandwich in in the United States. I sure do miss those old school ones I got in elementary. If only, I had the recipe!
National Ferret Day! A day set aside to educate about the lively and intelligent animal. It is actually a member of the fox family. I have had 3. They live longer with a mate. They are miniature thieves and will hide their treasures! This is also a day to educate on proper care, nutrition, welfare, and responsible ownership.
World Autism Day! The United States General Assembly unanimously declared this day as World Autism Awareness Day. This a day highlight the need to improve the quality of life of those with autism. It also promotes this so they can lead meaningful lives as an integral part of society. Wear blue today to promote awareness.
International Children’s Book Day! Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday is April 2. Since 1967, on or around his birthday, this day is celebrated to inspire the love of reading and call attention to children’s books. The International Board on Books for Young People sponsors this event each year. This includes writing competitions, book awards, and events with children’s authors. Read a book or magazine. If you are around children, they will see you and want to read. All the things they learn from reading and being read to is astounding!
National Couple Appreciation Month! Blissful Escapes founded this in 2010. It is set aside to promote and encourage couples to do something fun and different to reinforce and celebrate their relationship. What will you do special?

Sports Review… Just For You… Basketball Sucks, Baseball Woo! (3/25 – 3/31)

Welcome to this week’s Sports Review! Let’s have what’s happening in the world of sports for the local area teams and athletes!

 

Basketball

Mississippi State’s and Ole Miss’ team were both eliminated from the men’s NCAA tournament in their first-round contests. So that means basketball sucks right? No, not necessarily. If you had been keeping up with the women’s tournament, you would know that Mississippi State is a 1 seed and one of the odds on favorites with UConn to go all the way. Well, was an odds on favorite… unfortunately the Lady Bulldogs, would fall to 2 seed Oregon today 88-84. Teaira McCowan had 19 points, 15 rebounds, and 2 assists in the loss and to close out State’s season.

So yes now basketball sucks.

But after strong seasons from Ben Howland and Vic Schaeffer in Starkville and Kermit Davis in Oxford, highly anticipate basketball to be a focus going forward and big things in the Magnolia State.

Baseball

For Baseball this week, Coach Mike Bianco and the “Road Rebs” continued their stretch of the season away from Swayze Field. To start things off in mid-week action Ole Miss faced off against Memphis at Auto Zone Park downtown. The hero of the game would be Chase Cockrell, who would celebrate his birthday with a victory and an MVP performance. Cockrell’s 3 for 5 performance with two doubles and two clutch 9th inning RBI, would lead the Rebels to a 9-6 victory. The weekend series took the Rebels to the land of flannel to face off against the Arkansas Razorbacks. Friday would be the last time the Rebels tasted defeat (3-5) as Bianco’s boys would fire back Saturday and Sunday to clinch the series win. Saturday, Ole Miss got something that has been much desired this year… a solid pitching performance. That was made into a reality by Doug Nikhazy (S), Austin Miller (R), and Parker Caracci (C) as all three would leave the day with a 4-3 victory. Sunday would bring the powder blues and a convincing series win 10-5. The offense did its thing but the pitching stayed on the straight and narrow. Zach Phillips was credited with the win and Tyler Myers would make the Save.

Looking Forward the Rebels will return home this week and host North Alabama on Tuesday and the weekend series will bring in the Florida Gators.

Mid-week action for Mississippi State would have the Bulldogs host Mississippi Valley State. We’ll cut this short, State is a lot better than Valley State and beat them 18-5. Now to the weekend series. The Tigers of Louisiana State (LSU) would travel to Starkville for a three-game series that would run Thursday through Saturday. Game one was tightly contested, but the Bulldogs got the “W” with a final of 6-5. Sophomore Justin Foscue was a force to be reckoned with as he went 2 for 4 with 4 RBIs. The Tigers would claim Friday by the final score of 10-5. Saturday, the rubber match, would also be dropped by the Bulldogs by the final of 11-2.

After the losses to LSU, State sets at 24-5 on the season. Wednesday ULM will travel into Starkville, then for the weekend will travel to “Rocky Top” to face off against Tennessee.

Football

The Birmingham Iron played their final home game of the regular season in the inaugural season of the Alliance of American Football. Birmingham won the game 17-9 and with that victory punched their ticket to the 4 team playoffs to determine the first AAF Champion.

For Memphis, The Express was in control most of the game until when it matters most….. the end. Orlando has been one of the hottest teams in this league since it started so this could have been a big momentum booster for Mike Singletary’s team. But there comes that “Could’ve, Should’ve, Would’ve” situation. The Express wasn’t able to stave off the Orlando offense and would drop to the final 31-34. Memphis will travel to San Antonio next week.

For Ole Miss and Mississippi State, we have spring games upcoming! This Saturday will be the Grove Bowl for Ole Miss. Admission is free at Vaught Hemmingway Stadium.
