Weather Outlook

I think it was cool all day yesterday. Thankful for my electric blanket! Here’s a look at the WTVA – The Weather Authority forecast for the day:
Overall, high pressure will continue to control our weather forecast through the next few days and this will mean some pretty good weather will continue in our weather forecast over the next few days. We will see a couple of frontal systems will give us a couple of chances for some showers and thunderstorms in our weather forecast down the line. One of those chances that stands out will be on our Thursday and another chance will be found in our weather forecast for our late weekend and into early next week. There will be some chances for some heavy and/or hefty thunderstorms in the mix of things with these frontal passages. Today sunny, with a high near 64°. Calm wind becoming northwest around 5 mph in the afternoon. Tonight clear, with a low around 41°. Calm wind.

National Reconciliation Day! Since 1989, newspaper columnist, Ann Landers has promoted this day to encourage people to mend their broken relationships. Do you need to fix one of yours? National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day! It’s peanut butter and jelly time! PB&J is a popular sandwich in in the United States. I sure do miss those old school ones I got in elementary. If only, I had the recipe!
National Ferret Day! A day set aside to educate about the lively and intelligent animal. It is actually a member of the fox family. I have had 3. They live longer with a mate. They are miniature thieves and will hide their treasures! This is also a day to educate on proper care, nutrition, welfare, and responsible ownership.
World Autism Day! The United States General Assembly unanimously declared this day as World Autism Awareness Day. This a day highlight the need to improve the quality of life of those with autism. It also promotes this so they can lead meaningful lives as an integral part of society. Wear blue today to promote awareness.
International Children’s Book Day! Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday is April 2. Since 1967, on or around his birthday, this day is celebrated to inspire the love of reading and call attention to children’s books. The International Board on Books for Young People sponsors this event each year. This includes writing competitions, book awards, and events with children’s authors. Read a book or magazine. If you are around children, they will see you and want to read. All the things they learn from reading and being read to is astounding!

Sports Review… Just For You… Basketball Sucks, Baseball Woo! (3/25 – 3/31)

Welcome to this week’s Sports Review! Let’s have what’s happening in the world of sports for the local area teams and athletes!

 

Basketball

Mississippi State’s and Ole Miss’ team were both eliminated from the men’s NCAA tournament in their first-round contests. So that means basketball sucks right? No, not necessarily. If you had been keeping up with the women’s tournament, you would know that Mississippi State is a 1 seed and one of the odds on favorites with UConn to go all the way. Well, was an odds on favorite… unfortunately the Lady Bulldogs, would fall to 2 seed Oregon today 88-84. Teaira McCowan had 19 points, 15 rebounds, and 2 assists in the loss and to close out State’s season.

So yes now basketball sucks.

But after strong seasons from Ben Howland and Vic Schaeffer in Starkville and Kermit Davis in Oxford, highly anticipate basketball to be a focus going forward and big things in the Magnolia State.

Baseball

For Baseball this week, Coach Mike Bianco and the “Road Rebs” continued their stretch of the season away from Swayze Field. To start things off in mid-week action Ole Miss faced off against Memphis at Auto Zone Park downtown. The hero of the game would be Chase Cockrell, who would celebrate his birthday with a victory and an MVP performance. Cockrell’s 3 for 5 performance with two doubles and two clutch 9th inning RBI, would lead the Rebels to a 9-6 victory. The weekend series took the Rebels to the land of flannel to face off against the Arkansas Razorbacks. Friday would be the last time the Rebels tasted defeat (3-5) as Bianco’s boys would fire back Saturday and Sunday to clinch the series win. Saturday, Ole Miss got something that has been much desired this year… a solid pitching performance. That was made into a reality by Doug Nikhazy (S), Austin Miller (R), and Parker Caracci (C) as all three would leave the day with a 4-3 victory. Sunday would bring the powder blues and a convincing series win 10-5. The offense did its thing but the pitching stayed on the straight and narrow. Zach Phillips was credited with the win and Tyler Myers would make the Save.

Looking Forward the Rebels will return home this week and host North Alabama on Tuesday and the weekend series will bring in the Florida Gators.

Mid-week action for Mississippi State would have the Bulldogs host Mississippi Valley State. We’ll cut this short, State is a lot better than Valley State and beat them 18-5. Now to the weekend series. The Tigers of Louisiana State (LSU) would travel to Starkville for a three-game series that would run Thursday through Saturday. Game one was tightly contested, but the Bulldogs got the “W” with a final of 6-5. Sophomore Justin Foscue was a force to be reckoned with as he went 2 for 4 with 4 RBIs. The Tigers would claim Friday by the final score of 10-5. Saturday, the rubber match, would also be dropped by the Bulldogs by the final of 11-2.

After the losses to LSU, State sets at 24-5 on the season. Wednesday ULM will travel into Starkville, then for the weekend will travel to “Rocky Top” to face off against Tennessee.

Football

The Birmingham Iron played their final home game of the regular season in the inaugural season of the Alliance of American Football. Birmingham won the game 17-9 and with that victory punched their ticket to the 4 team playoffs to determine the first AAF Champion.

For Memphis, The Express was in control most of the game until when it matters most….. the end. Orlando has been one of the hottest teams in this league since it started so this could have been a big momentum booster for Mike Singletary’s team. But there comes that “Could’ve, Should’ve, Would’ve” situation. The Express wasn’t able to stave off the Orlando offense and would drop to the final 31-34. Memphis will travel to San Antonio next week.

For Ole Miss and Mississippi State, we have spring games upcoming! This Saturday will be the Grove Bowl for Ole Miss. Admission is free at Vaught Hemmingway Stadium.

An unusually coldstart to Apri. Freeze Warnings will be in effect across areas north of MS Highway 8 until mid-morning. But with abundant sunshine through midday and early afternoon, we should warm up a bit. Still, we remain at least 10 to 15 degrees cooler than average by mid-afternoon. This evening, clouds increase with a few passing showers in spots. Otherwise, we’ll be partly cloudy with areas of frost by Tuesday morning.

We begin our Thursday with mostly clear skies and mild temperatures. Most of us will be in the lower to mid-40s when you head out the door. But by the time the sun comes up, temperatures will quickly climb through the day. Expect abundant sunshien to stay with us from start to finish today. We’ll climb into the mid and upper 70s. No rainfall is anticipated. We remain mostly clear overnight Thursday into Friday as well. This will allow temperatures to slip into the upper 40s to lower 50s by Friday morning.

We begin our Wednesday with mostly clear skies and much colder temperatures. Areas of frost are likely as temperatures will start out in the lower to mid-30s. Throughout the morning, temperatures climb quickly. With sunshine, highs will climb into the upper 60s to lower 70s. We’ll remain clear into the night as well. MICHAEL WILLIAMS RECEIVES MISSISSIPPI ARTS COMMISSION FELLOWSHIP, BEGINS DEVELOPMENT ON NEXT FEATURE FILL

(Jackson, MS) – Michael Williams of West Point, MS, has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC). This grant is a portion of the nearly $1.4 million in grants the Commission awarded in 2018-2019 and will be used to support and continue the development of future film projects. The grants are made possible by continued funding from the Mississippi State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
“Artists who receive grants from the Mississippi Arts Commission represent some of the most gifted individuals in their respective fields,” said Malcolm White, executive director of MAC. “These outstanding artists carry on Mississippi’s legacy of artistic excellence, and MAC is proud to support those who enliven and enrich their communities with the creative spirit.”

“I’ve been making films since 2004,” says Michael Williams, filmmaker known for the award-winning films OzLand and The Atoning. “Over the years, I began to take the craft more seriously and began working professionally in film in 2007 as a camera assistant before transitioning to the role of cinematographer. While working as a cinematographer, I continued to write and direct my own films includ
ing dozens of short films and my two previous feature films OzLand and The Atoning. In 2015, I made the decision to pursue film full-time as both a cinematographer and writer/director. This wasn’t an easy choice since a majority of the work as a writer/director on the indie level is unpaid. Thankfully, MAC’s artist fellowship opportunity not only rewards the work and accomplishments by filmmakers like myself but it can also give the support one needs to make progress towards the development of new projects. As a full-time artist, it is difficult to find that time away from paying work to make real progress on the development of a feature film. This MAC fellowship gives me the ability to do just that.”

“I’m thrilled to officially announce my next feature film is Rosemary, a psychological drama about a woman who is driven to the brink of insanity by a mysterious abyss that emerges in her basement. While I can’t say much about the story and its characters, this is a project that I’m extremely excited make. It is thrilling while also thought-provoking, heartfelt, and complex. It is a project that I feel shows growth and maturity in terms of storytelling since my previous feature films. Like my two previous films, I plan to shoot this film in MS utilizing as much local cast and crew as possible

 

. I am still very early in the development of this film, however, I have assembled a producing team which includes Jeremy Burgess, Mindy Van Kuren, and Myself. We will soon begin the fundraising stage to secure the budget needed to properly produce the film. Without the MAC fellowship, this early development process would’ve been less focused and taken much longer to accomplish.”

March Madness, Manziel, and More-Sports Week in Review 3/11-3/17

Better late than never! Welcome to this week’s sports review! Let’s take a look at what all happened this past week in the sports world!

Basketball

This week the SEC took it’s talents to Nashville to crown a conference champion.
Ole Miss would have it’s time in the country music capital be minimal. The Rebels took the court against the Alabama Crimson Tide, it would be Avery Johnson’s team to advance into day three. Bama beat the Rebels by a final of 62-57. Devontae Schuler would lead Ole Miss with 14 points and 7 rebounds in the losing effort. Breein Tyree was practically shut down in the game with only 7 points, 1 assist, and 4 rebounds.
Mississippi State on the other hand completely dominated Texas A&M in their opening game of the tournament with the final 80-54. Lamar Peters had 15 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists in the victory. Moving on, the Bulldogs drew the next round matchup with the Tennessee Volunteers. This is where State would end their efforts in Nashville. The Vols would win by a final of 83-76. Quinndary Weatherspoon had 17 points, 2 assists, and 1 rebound.
So where do we go from here?
It’s time for March Madness and the NCAA Tournament. Both the Bulldogs and Rebels had their names called on Sunday to be apart of the big dance.
Mississippi State was selected as a 5 seed in the East Region, their first game will be Thursday against 12th seeded Liberty University. Game time will be 6:27pm this Friday on TruTV.

Ole Miss was selected as an 8 seed in the South Region. They will play 9th seeded Oklahoma, Friday at 11:40am on TruTV.

Baseball

Mississippi State had a successful week again. In midweek action, the Bulldogs faced Grambling and well just absolutely dominated with the final score of 18-1. MSU traveled down to Gainsville for their first SEC series of the year to face the Florida Gators. Friday

was a tight one that went in the favor of the Bulldogs 6-5. Saturday would bring in a doubleheader. In the first game, State doubled up the Gators 10-5, clinching their first series win. State would go for the sweep in game three of the weekend, but would ultimately come up short losing 2-4. In all, six Bulldog players recorded multi-hit games in a series opener. That list includes Tanner Allen, Jake Mangum, Elijah MacNamee, Dustin Skelton, Justin Foscue, and Josh Hatcher.

Mississippi State will stay home this week with games against Little Rock (tonight) and Samford (Wednesday) in midweek action, followed by a weekend series with Auburn. State sets with an overall record of 18-2 and 2-1 in SEC play.
 
For Ole Miss the week started out rough. With spring break the Rebels were able to travel up to “The Bluegrass State” for a midweek two-game series with the Louisville Cardinals. Louisville would lay claim to both games victories with finals of 3-4 and 8-10. The weekend conference series opener would have the Rebels return to Oxford to face the Alabama Crimson Tide. Friday’s game would be a pitcher’s duel with Ole Miss claiming a 1-0 victory. Saturday the bats lit up but in favor of the Tide, as Alabama took the split with the final of 8-6. Sunday one team kept the bats warm, luckily that would be the case for the home team as the Rebels took the rubber match 12-2.

The ceremonial first pitch of Saturday’s game was tossed out by non-other than NFL Hopeful and (now) former Ole Miss Wide Receiver, A.J. Brown. Brown was a 19th round draft pick by the San Diego Padres in 2016.

Ole Miss this week will have midweek action at home against Arkansas Pine Bluff (tonight/tomorrow) and will travel to Missouri for a weekend series with the Tigers

Football

In the Alliance of American Football this week:

Memphis would suffer yet another loss, this time to the Salt Lake Stallions by an ending score of 22-9. Unfortunately, starting quarterback Zach Mettenberger suffered an ankle injury on the first play of scrimmage as was replaced by Brandon Silvers. Silvers didn’t have a horrible game as he was 23 for 37 passing with a touchdown. But Express faithful, don’t give up hope. Former Heisman Trophy winner and somewhat troublesome quarterback Johnny Manziel has started practicing with the Express and could possibly see action in his first game for Memphis this weekend as the Birmingham Iron will be coming to Liberty Bowl Stadium.

 
And on that note, to Birmingham. The Iron took on the San Diego Fleet in a close high scoring affair. The Iron at the end of the day was able to score just a little bit higher as they would take a 32-29 victory over the Fleet. Starting quarterback Luiz Perez accounted for 3 touchdowns and 359 yards in the victory. As previously stated, the Iron will head west on I-22 for a matchup against Memphis this weekend.
